Today, on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, we are reminded of Mary’s invitation to come, to serve, and to bring hope to those who suffer. Through the Our Lady of Lourdes Pilgrimage: Legacy of Sr. Rose Mary Sam Scholarship Fund, that invitation continues to be answered.

For over 50 years, Sr. Rose Mary Sam dedicated her life to teaching at Michigan Catholic high schools, inspiring students, parents, and friends to volunteer at Lourdes, the “City of the Poor.” In honor of her legacy, Rosanne Bommarito Brugnoni, a member of the Catholic Foundation board, established the fund to continue Sister Sam’s mission of compassion. Through a collaboration between the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) College and the Order of Malta, students have the opportunity to work alongside medical professionals caring for the sick and dying who make the spiritual journey to Lourdes.

Because of this scholarship, students have the chance to  encounter Christ and form hearts of compassion while providing dignified care to those most in need. Now entering its fourth year, the pilgrimage honors Sister Rose Mary Sam’s legacy by empowering future healthcare professionals to integrate faith, mercy, and service into their vocation.

This year’s recipient, Justin Francis, shares how his experience in Lourdes transformed him spiritually, personally, and professionally.
