2026 Investment Outlook
Navigating Uncertainty with Prudence

The Catholic Foundation of Michigan hosted its annual investment webinar on February 19, 2026, bringing together donors, partners, and stakeholders to review market conditions and the Catholic Foundation of Michigan’s investment approach.
David Gardiner, Resident Director, Senior Vice President, Senior Portfolio Manager at Merrill Lynch and the Foundation’s investment advisor, led the presentation and provides transparency into how the Foundation manages its assets and serves its mission. Gardiner reminded attendees of the bigger picture:
“Every dollar at the foundation is connected to a person, a family, a meal, a clinic visit, a playground. That’s why the markets matter—because the mission that we serve has meaning.”
David emphasized that “markets have weather—storms, wind, sudden swings in temperature. Our mission, though, moves in season. The work remains steady.” Rather than attempting to time markets, the Foundation focuses on building portfolios that can weather different environments while continuing to support its fundholder ministry partners. “Our goal is not optimism for optimism’s sake, the goal is measured confidence—enough confidence to stay disciplined, keep the long view, and avoid reacting to every gust of wind,” Gardiner concluded.
Investment Strategies Available
The Foundation offers three strategies: Balanced for long-term growth (where the majority of funds are invested), Conservative for mid-term needs, and Stable Value for short-term liquidity with competitive rates. All strategies are designed to align with Catholic values while providing appropriate returns for different time horizons.
The Foundation has reached $75 million in assets under management, making it the fastest-growing independent Catholic foundation in the United States. The portfolio consists of 70% endowments, 15% donor-advised funds, and 15% scholarships and grants. The first quarter of 2026 saw strong momentum with $5 million in new contributions.
