The Spirit of Christmas: Empowering Students with Special Needs
Guest Writer: Natalie Bohay
Many of us remember that timeless classic Charles Dickens novella, A Christmas Carol, and how Ebenezar Scrooge went from an apathetic curmudgeon to a generous old soul on Christmas Day. Even the ghosts of Christmas Present and Future had revealed to Scrooge that if he had not been that way to Tiny Tim, his employee, Bob Cratchit’s sickly son, the boy would never have a chance in life.
This Advent and Christmas season, make this a golden opportunity to shed off that “Bah Humbug” attitude and open wide the windows and doors of your hearts to make room in the inn for Catholic education for our children with special needs. These individuals are the “Tiny Tim’s” of our time. Bearing in mind the Infant Jesus, the real spirit of Christmas past, present and future, and with your generosity, your gift to the St. Margaret of Castello Granting Fund can be that special needs child’s next present under his or her family’s Christmas tree.
We can become the Magi of our generation, bringing that gold, frankincense and myrrh to God’s special children. Your yes and kindness mirroring that of Holy Mother Mary can counter your inner Scrooge-ness and Herod-ity towards those individuals, whether in a mother’s womb or going about our daily lives, so that in the schools, they would be in wonder of His love and exclaim “Joy to the world” everywhere they go. In this very difficult time, there is no absolutely better time than to give a bit of greens and silver into boxes for them this holiday season.
Your generous gift to help Catholic schools include youth with special needs is going to begin to look and sound very much like Christmas. And because of that, the twinkle in the smile on your special needs son or daughter’s face can be the star that lights the way to Bethlehem and to Baby Jesus, that even good old St. Nicholas himself would smile down upon you. It is then when, with our children with special needs, we shall cry out as Tiny Tim did, “God bless us every one!” Merry Christmas!
